How Egoscue’s Personalized Posture Therapy Restores Bodies—and Belief

At Egoscue, we know that behind every ache and limitation lies something deeper than pain: disappointment, doubt, and the quiet fear that nothing will ever truly help.

Jamie, EJ, and Shahrose couldn’t have arrived at Egoscue under more different circumstances. But each of them—like thousands before—shared a desire to feel better, move better, and live without fear of pain returning.

Different Stories, Same Frustration

For Jamie, it was his back. Years of lower back pain dating back to high school, two hip surgeries, and a sales career filled with long drives made everyday life feel like a constant game of injury roulette. “Any time I got behind the wheel for more than an hour, I’d brace for my back to go out,” he said. But the real turning point came when his family planned a month-long, 4,500-mile road trip. “I was excited, but secretly worried I wouldn’t be able to be part of the moments with my wife and kids,” he shared. “I didn’t want to be the guy stuck in the car or sidelined in pain.”

EJ’s journey began with fear. After a spinal adjustment gone wrong, she was left with searing nerve pain in her arms and legs. “Every new treatment made it worse,” she remembers. “It wasn’t just the pain—it was the overwhelming sense that this might be my new normal.”

And Shahrose? His pain was relentless. At just 30 years old, he arrived at the Egoscue clinic in Portland hunched over, guarding his left arm. Two herniated cervical discs had left him with nerve damage, numbness, and an overwhelming sense of defeat. “I couldn’t train. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t even sit at my desk without flaring up,” he said. “It started to affect more than just my body—it got in my head.”

Meeting Clients Where They Are

Our work at Egoscue starts not with treatment, but with listening.

“Every client has a different story, but our first goal is always the same: understand what their body is trying to tell us,” explains Calvin Murray, Clinic Owner of Egoscue Augusta, who worked closely with Jamie. “Pain isn’t random. It’s a signal that something’s out of alignment. Our job is to decode it.”

For Jamie, the solution started with what he calls his “road menu”—a set of customized exercises he and his wife could do at rest stops during that long family trip. “It was a total experiment,” Jamie laughs. “But it worked. It was the first road trip I didn’t have to worry about chronic pain. And I was present for all of it.”

EJ, meanwhile, needed something gentler. “I couldn’t handle one more thing that made my pain worse,” she said. At her first appointment with Greg Heinemann, Clinic Owner of Egoscue Westchester, she noticed something immediately: “He didn’t push. He met me where I was—and somehow I walked out of that first session feeling better. That had never happened before.”

Greg reflects on that moment: “EJ came in exhausted—physically and emotionally. She didn’t need a heroic stretch. She needed her nervous system to trust movement again. We built from there.”

Shahrose’s journey started with rapid results, but sustaining progress required patience, consistency, and adaptability. After just two hours of targeted posture work, his side-profile photos revealed a striking transformation: his head realigned, shoulders dropped back, and hips rebalanced. “I was shocked,” he said. “I looked like a different person—and I felt like one too.”

Shahrose and his therapist adjusted his exercises week by week, based on his body’s response. “A key for Shahrose was doing regular posture resets throughout the day to offset the long hours spent sitting at his computer,” shares his therapist, Laura. “This simple habit helped him feel more in control of his pain and progress.”  His pain dropped from 8/10 to 4/10 within a month.

“This work isn’t magic,” explains his therapist Laura. “It’s biology. The body wants to heal. We just have to give it the right conditions. That’s where Egoscue is different. We don’t hand out a one-size-fits-all routine—we look at your posture, your movement patterns, and the root cause of your pain. When people finally experience exercises that speak directly to what their body needs, the results feel almost immediate. It’s like the body says, ‘Thank you—this is what I’ve been waiting for.’”

More Than Healing—A Return to Life

For all three, the turning point wasn’t just less pain—it was more possibility.

EJ, now over a decade into using Egoscue as part of her daily routine, says, “I don’t just feel better—I trust my body again.” That trust paid off when she tweaked her shoulder recently. “I wasn’t afraid. I just called Greg, we figured out what was out of balance, and it resolved. That’s the power of knowing your body.”

Jamie now finishes every workout with his personalized Egoscue menu. “This is part of my life now. It’s like brushing my teeth—I don’t skip it. I feel stronger, more mobile, and like I can handle whatever comes up.”

And Shahrose? He recently went hiking at Mt. Rainier, pain-free, for the first time in years. “I even ran that day,” he smiled. “No meds. No nerve pain. That was the moment I knew I was coming back.”

But what excites him most isn’t just hiking—it’s the possibility of returning to the things he thought he’d lost forever: weight training, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, even boxing. “I had accepted that I might never do those things again,” he said. “Now, I’m not just hoping—I’m planning. Egoscue gave me my future back.”

As Greg puts it, “Most people come to Egoscue because they’ve lost trust in their body—they’re afraid of the next flare-up or injury. Our work is about rebuilding that trust from the ground up. When your body moves well, when it’s aligned and pain-free, you stop bracing for breakdown and start believing in your own strength again. That changes everything.”
